‘공유경제’란 물품을 소유의 개념이 아닌, 서로 대여하고 차용해 쓰는 공유의 개념으로 인식하는 경제활동이다. 다시 말해 생산된 하나의 재화를 여럿이 공유해 나눠 쓰는 것이다. 미국의 시사 주간지 <타임>은 공유경제를 ‘세상을 바꿀 수 있는 10가지 아이디어’로 꼽기도 했다. 현재 우리가 직면한 과잉생산과 환경 문제, 일자리 부족 문제 등을 동시에 해결할 방안이 될 수 있기 때문이다.
공유경제 아래에서는 합리적인 생산과 소비를 하는 개인이 시장 수요의 변화에 따라 공급을 조절한다. 이를 통해 경제 전체의 비용을 절감하고, 자원 활용 극대화로 자원 낭비와 환경 오염을 줄일 수 있다. 나아가 새로운 플랫폼과 직업, 산업을 탄생시켜 우리 사회의 시스템까지 바꾸게 된다.
공유의 대상은 물건이나 모빌리티, 주택처럼 물리적인 재화나 자산에 그치지 않는다. 소프트웨어와 지식, 개인이 만든 영상과 미디어 등도 공유의 대상으로서 새로운 가치를 창출한다. 유튜브를 통해 크리에이터들이 업로드한 영상을 즐기고, 온라인 공개강좌 무크(MOOC)를 통해 공부하며, ‘우버(Uber)’나 ‘쏘카(Socar)’, ‘따릉이’ 등과 친숙하다면 당신은 이미 공유경제 속에서 살고 있다.

The “sharing economy” refers to an economic activity in which goods are not owned but rented and leased based on the concept of “sharing.” In other words, a single product is shared by multiple users. The American news magazine Time described the sharing economy as one of the “Ten Ideas That Will Change the World,” since it can help resolve all problems that we face today, such as overproduction, environmental issues, and lack of jobs.
In the sharing economy, individuals, as a reasonable producer and consumer, control supply according to changes in market demand. This helps reduce the total economic cost, as well as resource waste and environmental pollution by maximizing the use of existing resources. Furthermore, this system can lead to the birth of new platforms, jobs, and industries, changing the system of our society.
What can be shared is not confined to physical goods and assets, including products, mobility, and houses. Software, knowledge, and video and media made by individuals can be shared to create new value.
