한양대는 일찍이 인공지능(AI)과 법 관련 쟁점 및 리걸테크 등을 가르치는 교과목을 개설해 운영할 뿐 아니라, AI 전문가 특강 등 다양한 프로그램을 전개해 왔다. 시대를 선도하는 이런 법학 교육의 구심점은 법학연구소 산하 ‘AI와 법 연구센터’다. AI와 법 연구센터장인 박혜진 교수와의 인터뷰를 통해 AI 시대가 요구하는 법조인을 양성하기 위한 한양대의 노력을 조명한다.
Hanyang University was an early mover—not only establishing and running courses that teach issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) and law as well as legal-tech, but also rolling out a range of programs such as special lectures by AI experts. The “Center for AI and Law” under the Institute for Legal Studies is at the heart of law education to lead this AI era. Professor Park Hai-jin, Director of the Center, highlighted how Hanyang University exerts continuous efforts to train legal professionals demanded during the AI era at the interview.
2022년부터 ‘리걸테크 런치토크’ 운영
‘AI 시대, 격변하는 법조 시장과 변호사 역량 강화 방안’, ‘AI 시대, 변호사의 미래’, ‘인공지능에서의 개인정보 보호 이슈와 대응방안’. 이는 지난해 ‘AI와 법 연구센터’에서 법학전문대학원(로스쿨) 학생들을 대상으로 연 ‘리걸테크 런치토크’의 강연 주제들이다. 리걸테크 런치토크란 학점 관리와 변호사시험 준비로 바쁜 로스쿨 학생들의 시간을 절약하기 위해 점심식사 시간에 샌드위치를 먹으며 법원, 검찰, 로펌, 학계, 산업계 등 다양한 분야의 AI 전문가들을 초빙해 법조계가 직면한 AI 관련 쟁점들에 대한 강연을 듣는 시간이다. 처음 행사를 진행한 것은 박혜진 교수가 센터장을 맡은 2022년이었다. 챗GPT의 출현으로 AI가 대중화되기 전부터 이미 AI 시대에 선제적으로 대비해 온 셈이다.
“리걸테크 런치토크는 로스쿨 학생들에게 법과 AI에 대한 관심을 촉구하기 위해 기획됐습니다. 이제는 정기 프로그램이 돼 매년 7~10회 정도 열리고 있어요. 처음에는 30여 명이 참여했는데, AI 수요가 폭발적으로 증가한 2023년부터는 매회 60~80여 명이 참석할 정도로 학생들의 관심이 높습니다. 처음에는 단순히 호기심으로 참여했던 학생들이 이제 AI 시대에 어떻게 경쟁력을 확보해야 하는지 그 해답을 찾기 위해 참여하고 있습니다.”
AI의 거센 열풍이 우리 사회에 휘몰아치고 있다. 법조계라고 무풍지대일 리 없다. 이미 판례 검색부터 계약서 검토, 의견서나 소장 등 법률 문서 분류, 서면 작성에 이르기까지 변호사 업무의 상당 부분이 AI를 통해 효율성을 높이고 있다. 변호사뿐 아니라 AI를 통해 핵심 증거를 찾아내는 등 검찰과 법원, 경찰도 AI의 활용을 확대하는 추세다. 법(Legal)과 기술(Technology)의 합성어인 리걸테크를 활용한 새로운 법률 서비스 시장도 태동했다. 지난 5월 미국의 유명 AI 기업인 앤트로픽(Anthropic)은 법률 업계를 겨냥해 자사의 AI 서비스 ‘클로드(Claude)’를 계약 관리, 판례 조사, 소송 대응, 기업 법무까지 아우르는 전문 법률 플랫폼으로 진화시키겠다며 법률 특화 플러그인을 공개했다.
“학생들에게 리걸테크 등 법과 AI에 대한 교육이 급선무라고 판단해 AI와 법 연구센터를 중심으로 관련 프로그램을 운영하고 있습니다. 이는 AI 관련 커리큘럼이 부족한 현 로스쿨의 교육 과정을 보완해 리걸테크 역량을 갖춘 법조인을 양성하는 데 기여할 것입니다.”
Running the “Legal-Tech Lunch Talk” Since 2022
“The Rapidly Changing Legal Market in the AI Era and Ways to Strengthen Lawyers’ Capabilities,” “The Future of Lawyers in the AI Era,” and “Privacy Protection Issues in Artificial Intelligence and How to Respond.” These were the lecture topics of the “Legal-Tech Lunch Talk” that the Center for AI and Law held last year for students of the School of Law (law school). The Legal-Tech Lunch Talk is a session designed to save the time of law school students—who are busy managing their grades and preparing for the bar examination—by inviting AI experts from diverse fields such as the courts, the prosecution, law firms, academia, and industry to give lectures on AI-related issues facing the legal field, all while attendees eat sandwiches over lunch. The event was first held in 2022, when Professor Park Hai-jin took up the post of director. In other words, the center had been proactively preparing for the AI era even before the arrival of ChatGPT brought AI into the mainstream.
“The Legal-Tech Lunch Talk was conceived to spur law school students’ interest in law and AI. It has now become a regular program, held about 7 to 10 times a year. At first, around 30 people took part, but since 2023—when demand for AI surged—each session has drawn 60 to 80 attendees, a sign of how keen students’ interest is. Students who at first joined out of pure curiosity now come to find answers on how to build their competitiveness in the AI era.”
A fierce wave of AI is sweeping through our society, and the legal field is no exception. From case-law searches to contract review, the classification of legal documents such as opinions and complaints, and the drafting of briefs, a substantial part of lawyers’ work is already gaining efficiency through AI. And it is not only lawyers: the prosecution, the courts, and the police are also expanding their use of AI, for instance to uncover key evidence. A new legal-services market has emerged as well, built on legal-tech—a portmanteau of “Legal” and “Technology.” This past May, the renowned U.S. AI company Anthropic unveiled legal-specialized plug-ins, announcing that it would evolve its AI service “Claude” into a professional legal platform spanning contract management, case-law research, litigation response, and corporate legal affairs.
“We judged that educating students about law and AI, including legal-tech, was an urgent priority, so we run related programs centered on the Center for AI and Law. This will complement the current law school curriculum, which is short on AI-related coursework, and help cultivate legal professionals equipped with legal-tech competencies.”
법(Legal)과 기술(Technology)의 합성어인 리걸테크(Legal-Tech)는 AI, 빅데이터, 클라우드 컴퓨팅 등 디지털 기술을 활용해 법률 서비스를 자동화하거나 효율화하는 ‘법률 기술’을 말한다.
Legal-Tech, a portmanteau of “Legal” and “Technology,” refers to “legal technology” that uses digital technologies such as AI, big data, and cloud computing to automate or streamline legal services.
리걸테크 서비스 개발에도 도전
AI와 법 연구센터는 리걸테크 런치토크 외에도 2023년부터 매년 정규 교육 커리큘럼에 ‘리걸테크 실무’라는 교과목을 개설해 운영하고 있다. 이는 개인정보 보호법, 저작권법 같은 AI 관련 법률뿐 아니라, 법원·검찰·국회·로펌 등 각 기관에서 AI를 활용할 때 발생할 수 있는 문제 등 AI와 관련된 법의 정책적 쟁점을 다루는 수업이다. 수업 방식은 담당 교수의 강의를 기본으로 외부 특강, 논문 지도 등 다채롭게 진행된다. 박혜진 교수는 인공지능과 관련된 법적 쟁점을 다루는 데 그치지 않고 리걸테크 서비스를 직접 개발해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위해 공과대학과 융합수업도 추진한 바 있다.
“2022년 카이스트의 제안으로 ‘법률 인공지능’이라는 수업에 공동 강사로 참여한 적이 있었습니다. 공대생과 법대생이 함께 리걸테크 서비스를 개발하는 수업이었죠. 한양대에서도 관련 수업을 진행하고 싶어 2024년 1학기에 기술경영전문대학원 김영민 교수와 협업해 융합수업을 추진했습니다. 여건 부족으로 현재는 개설하지 못하고 있으나 앞으로 다시 추진한다면 학생들의 리걸테크 역량을 향상하는 데 큰 도움이 되리라 생각합니다.”
2024년 당시 진행한 융합수업은 단순히 법학에 AI 기술 강의를 접목한 것이 아니었다. 공대 학생과 로스쿨 학생이 2:2 비율로 팀을 이뤄 리걸테크 서비스 시제품을 직접 개발해 보는 프로젝트로 추진됐다. 공학과 법학 분야의 실질적인 융합, 남다른 접근은 호평을 이끌었다. 빠르게 발전 중인 분야인 만큼, 리걸테크 실무 수업은 매회 새로운 시도를 이어가는 중이다. 올해는 판결문에서 자동으로 정보를 추출한 후 통계를 분석하거나 AI의 API(응용 프로그래밍 인터페이스)를 연결해 활용하는 방법을 가르치고 있다.
한편, 리걸테크 실무 수업에서 도출된 논문이나 리걸테크 서비스를 발표하는 대학원생을 위해 한양대는 인공지능과 법 학술대회를 개최하고 있다. 2023년 8월에 열린 제1회 학술대회에서 대상과 최우수상을 받은 논문은 그 우수성을 인정받아 한양대 법학연구소 발간 등재지인 ‘법학논총’에 게재되기도 했다. 2024년 8월에 열린 제2회 학술대회에서는 논문뿐 아니라 리걸테크 서비스 시제품이 공개됐다.
Taking On the Challenge of Developing Legal-Tech Services
Beyond the Legal-Tech Lunch Talk, the Center for AI and Law has, since 2023, offered a course called “Legal-Tech Practice” as part of its regular curriculum each year. This class addresses not only AI-related laws such as the Personal Information Protection Act and the Copyright Act, but also the policy issues surrounding AI and the law—including problems that can arise when AI is used by institutions such as the courts, the prosecution, the National Assembly, and law firms. The class is run in a variety of formats: built around lectures by the instructor in charge, complemented by outside special lectures, thesis supervision, and more. Professor Park has not stopped at addressing the legal issues related to artificial intelligence; she has also pursued a convergence course with the College of Engineering to give students the chance to develop legal-tech services for themselves.
“In 2022, at KAIST’s invitation, I took part as a co-instructor in a class called “Legal Artificial Intelligence.” It was a class in which engineering students and law students developed legal-tech services together. Wanting to run a similar class at Hanyang as well, in the first semester of 2024 I collaborated with Professor Kim Young-min of the Graduate School of Technology & Innovation Management to launch a convergence course. Owing to a lack of resources, we are unable to offer it at present, but if we pursue it again in the future, I believe it would be a great help in strengthening students’ legal-tech competencies.”
The convergence course held in 2024 was not merely a matter of grafting AI-technology lectures onto legal studies. It was carried out as a project in which engineering students and law school students formed teams at a 2:2 ratio to develop prototypes of legal-tech services themselves. This genuine convergence of engineering and law, with its distinctive approach, drew favorable reviews. Because the field is developing so rapidly, the Legal-Tech Practice class keeps trying something new each time it runs. This year, it teaches students how to automatically extract information from court judgments and then analyze the statistics, or how to connect and use AI APIs (application programming interfaces).
Meanwhile, for graduate students presenting papers or legal-tech services produced in the Legal-Tech Practice class, Hanyang University holds an Artificial Intelligence and Law academic conference. At the first conference, held in August 2023, the papers that won the Grand Prize and the Excellence Award were recognized for their quality and were even published in Hanyang Law Review, an accredited journal issued by Hanyang University’s Institute for Legal Studies. At the second conference, held in August 2024, not only papers but also prototypes of legal-tech services were unveiled.

AI 법률 서비스 시대, 어떻게 맞을 것인가
미국 스탠퍼드대학에서 박사과정을 밟던 중 컴퓨터공학을 부전공한 박혜진 교수는 당시 AI 관련 과목들을 수강하며 법학에 AI를 접목한 연구를 수행하기 시작했다. 그중 하나가 법원 내 조정 사건을 효율적으로 처리하기 위해 AI를 활용하는 방안과 조정 성립 비율을 연구한 것인데, 올해 SSCI급 국제학술지인 <컴퓨터 로우앤시큐리티 리뷰(Computer Law & Security Review)>에 게재됐다. 연구 결과, 선행연구들에서는 인공지능 판사에 대한 불신감이 큰 것으로 나타났는데, 본 연구에서는 AI가 생성한 조정안에 대해 오히려 정확하고 공정하다고 인식하는 것으로 분석됐다. 그만큼 사회적으로 AI 생성 결과물에 대한 수용도가 높아진 것이다.
“법원에서 올해 3월부터 생성형 AI를 활용한 서비스를 개시했습니다. 검찰도 도입을 검토하고, 경찰도 많은 연구개발을 진행한 상태입니다. 변호사들은 이미 AI를 일상적으로 사용하고 있습니다. 이제 활용은 기본이고 변호사도 AI 기술에 대한 이해도를 높여야 법정에서 변론을 잘할 수 있습니다. 그리고 사회 전반적으로 AI가 확산되고 있어 그와 관련해 많은 법적 이슈가 발생할 것입니다. 이는 앞으로 법조인들이 대응해야 할 사건이 될 것입니다.”
박혜진 교수가 리걸테크 역량의 중요성을 강조하는 이유다. 아울러 리걸테크 시대를 살아갈 한양인들을 위해 다음과 같이 조언했다.
“시대 변화를 따라가기보다는 적극적으로 변화를 이끌어가는 역할을 맡으시기를 바랍니다.”
How Should We Face the Era of AI Legal Services?
Professor Park Hai-jin, who minored in computer science while pursuing her doctorate at Stanford University in the United States, began conducting research that grafted AI onto legal studies as she took AI-related courses at the time. One such study examined how to use AI to efficiently handle court-annexed mediation cases and analyzed mediation settlement rates; it was published this year in Computer Law & Security Review, an SSCI-level international journal. The research found that, whereas earlier studies had shown deep distrust of AI judges, in this study AI-generated mediation proposals were, on the contrary, perceived as accurate and fair—an indication of how much society’s acceptance of AI-generated outputs has grown.
“The courts launched a service using generative AI this past March. The prosecution is reviewing its adoption, and the police have carried out a great deal of research and development. Lawyers already use AI on a daily basis. Now that using it is a given, lawyers too must deepen their understanding of AI technology in order to argue well in court. And as AI spreads throughout society, many related legal issues will arise. These will be the cases that legal professionals must address going forward.”
This is why Professor Park Hai-jin emphasizes the importance of legal-tech competencies. She also offered the following advice for the Hanyangians who will live through the legal-tech era.
“Rather than merely follow the changes of the times, I hope you will lead such changes.”
