한양대 의과대학이 2025년 하반기 보건복지부의 ‘융합형 의사과학자 양성 사업’에 선정됨에 따라 지난 1월 미래인재양성단 산하 ‘한양대 의사과학자 양성사업단’을 공식 발족했다. 사업단은 바이오헬스 산업의 미래를 밝힐 우수한 의사과학자를 양성하고자 의미 있는 첫발을 내디뎠다. 초대 사업단장을 맡은 의과대학 신경과 김영서 교수를 만났다.
After being selected for the Ministry of Health and Welfare's “Interdisciplinary Physician-Scientist Training Program” in the second half of 2025, Hanyang University College of Medicine officially launched the “Hanyang University Medical Scientist Training Program” in January under its Future Talent Training Division. The program has taken its meaningful first steps toward nurturing outstanding physician-scientists who will shape the future of the biohealth industry. We spoke with Professor Youngseo Kim of the Major in Neurology at Hanyang University College of Medicine, who serves as the program's inaugural director.
인류 건강에 이바지할 ‘의사과학자’
“이제까지 의과대학은 단순히 1차 의료를 담당하는 의료인 양성에 주력해 왔습니다. 물론 진료도 중요하지만, 우수한 치료법이나 진단법, 새로운 치료제, 치료기기를 개발하면 의학 발전을 이끌어 더 많은 환자를 살릴 수 있습니다. 의과대학에 우수한 학생들이 많이 진학하고 있는데 이들 중 10~20%만이라도 연구에 주력하는 의사과학자로 육성할 수 있다면 의미가 매우 클 것입니다.”
전 세계적으로 인구 고령화와 건강에 대한 수요가 높아지면서 바이오헬스 산업이 국가의 미래 전략산업으로 부상했다. 김영서 단장은 이러한 사회적 요구로 말미암아 의과대학에 새로운 소임이 부여됐음을 직시한다. 바로 연구하는 의사, 즉 의사과학자를 양성하는 일이다. ‘한양대 의사과학자 양성사업단’은 의사과학자로의 성장을 지원해 세상을 바꿀 혁신적인 연구자를 배출하기 위해 출범했다.
의사과학자를 양성하기 위해서는 의과대학 교육 시스템 자체가 바뀌어야 한다. 의학 연구자는 의학뿐 아니라 기초과학부터 인공지능, 데이터사이언스 같은 다양한 공학 분야까지 섭렵해야 하기 때문이다. 한양대 의과대학은 이미 2024년에 융합의학 교육과정으로 개편해 의과대학 과정에서 선택할 수 있는 과목의 수를 대폭 확대했다. 그래서 현재 의과대학 학생들은 공과대학이나 한양YK인터칼리지 과목까지 선택해 들을 수 있다. 이를 위해 공과대학 교수들과 협의해 융합의과학, 융합의공학 과목을 한양YK인터칼리지에 개설했으며, 공과대학에 의과대학 학생들이 수강할 수 있는 수업을 운영하고 있다.
“과거 의과대학 학생은 교양 과목 중심의 의예과 시절을 거쳐 의학과 1~2학년에 기초의학과 임상의학 과목을 배우고, 3~4학년에 임상실습을 마친 후 의사면허를 취득했습니다. 하지만 최근 인공지능과 빅데이터 등이 발전하면서 의예과 교육이 바뀌고 있어요. 데이터사이언스의 이해·응용·통섭 수업이나 의료기기의 이해·바이오메디컬공학 특강, 의과학 기초연구·의과학 기초실습 등이 의예과 과목으로 개설되는 추세입니다. 다양한 학문 간 교류를 경험할 수 있는 환경을 구축하고 있습니다.”
“Physician-Scientists” Contributing to Human Health
“Until now, medical schools have primarily focused on training healthcare professionals to provide primary care. Of course, clinical practice is important, but developing superior treatments, diagnostic methods, new therapeutics, and medical devices can advance medicine and save more lives. Many outstanding students enter medical schools, and it would be enormously meaningful if even 10 to 20% of them could be trained as physician-scientists dedicated to research.”
As global populations age and demand for healthcare continues to rise, the biohealth industry has emerged as a key strategic industry for the nation's future. Director Youngseo Kim recognizes that these social demands have placed a new responsibility on medical schools—namely, nurturing physician-scientists: physicians who conduct research. The “Hanyang University Medical Scientist Training Program” was launched to support students' growth into physicianscientists and to produce innovative researchers who will change the world.
Cultivating physician-scientists requires transforming the medical education system itself. This is because medical researchers must master not only medicine but also a wide range of fields—from basic sciences to engineering disciplines such as AI and data science.
Hanyang University College of Medicine reorganized its curriculum into a convergence medicine program as early as 2024, significantly expanding the number of elective courses available to students. As a result, medical students can now take courses from the College of Engineering or Hanyang YK Intercollege. To make this possible, courses in Medicine Future and Medical Convergence Engineering have been established at Hanyang YK Intercollege in consultation with engineering faculty, and courses open to medical students are now being offered at the College of Engineering as well.
“In the past, medical students spent their pre-medicine years on liberal arts-centered coursework, studied basic and clinical medicine in the first two years of the medical program, completed their clinical practicum in years three and four, and earned their medical license. But as AI and big data have advanced in recent years, premedicine education is changing. Courses in data science—covering understanding, application, and interdisciplinary integration— along with special lectures on medical devices and biomedical engineering, and foundational research and practicum courses in medical science are increasingly being introduced at the premedicine level. We are building an environment where students can experience interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.”

대학원 과정 및 교원 임용까지 전 주기 지원
한양대 의사과학자 양성사업단의 출범과 함께 2026년도 1학기부터 의사과학자 트랙을 본격적으로 운영하게 돼 기대를 모은다. 이전과 달리 연구 등 의사 외 다양한 진로를 모색하는 의과대학 학생들이 많다고 말하는 김영서 단장.
“지난해 의과대학 학생들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시했는데 10% 정도가 의사과학자 트랙에 관심이 있다고 답했습니다. 의예과 입학생 중 연구에 관심이 있는 학생을 대상으로 선발하되 처음에는 의사과학자 사업 소개, 의사과학자로 활동하는 선배 특강 등을 통해 어떤 장점이 있는지를 보여줄 생각입니다. 이후 의예과 2년 동안 정해진 융합의학 과목을 일정 학점 이상 수강하는 경우 예비의사과학자 대상자로 관리할 계획입니다.”
이렇게 예비의사과학자로 선발된 학생들에게는 해외 의과대학 교육 프로그램 및 창의 우수 의학 연구 공모전에 우선 참여할 수 있는 혜택을 부여하고 연구비도 지원한다. 필수적으로 의학교육을 받아야 하는 의학과 시절에도 연구에 뜻이 있는 학생이라면 교수와 일대일 멘토-멘티를 이루는 한양의과학자 양성 프로그램에 참여할 수 있다. 이를 통해 학점을 취득하고 의과학기초실습 캠프와 융합의학 선택실습을 수강하면, 융합의과학 마이크로디그리를 수여하는 방안도 검토하고 있다.
이러한 과정을 의학교육학교실에서 포트폴리오로 체계적으로 관리할 뿐 아니라, 졸업 후 의사과학자 대학원 과정의 연구비 지원과 박사후 연구 지원 사업 연계, 그리고 이후 우선 교원 임용에 이르기까지, 의사과학자의 전 주기 길을 구체적으로 제시할 것이다. 이것이 바로 사업단이 그리는 청사진이다. 이러한 지원은 경제적 문제나 연구를 지속할 기반이 부족해 의사과학자의 길을 걷다 중도 이탈하는 사례를 막기 위함이기도 하다.
Full-Cycle Support from Graduate Programs to Faculty Appointment
With the launch of the Hanyang University Medical Scientist Training Program, the physician-scientist track is set to be fully operational from the first semester of 2026, which has generated considerable anticipation. Director Youngseo Kim notes that, unlike in the past, many medical students are now exploring diverse career paths beyond clinical practice, including research.
“A survey we conducted among medical students last year found that around 10% expressed interest in the physician-scientist track. We plan to select from incoming pre-medicine students who show an interest in research, and initially demonstrate the appeal of the path through introductory sessions on the program and special talks by senior alumni who are active physician-scientists. Students who go on to complete a specified number of credits in designated convergence medicine courses over their two years of pre-medicine will be selected as prospective physician-scientist candidates.”
Students selected as prospective physician-scientists will receive priority access to overseas medical school education programs and the Creative Medical Research Competition, along with research funding support. Even during the medical program years, when core medical training is required, students passionate about research can enroll in the Hanyang Physician-Scientist Training Program, which matches each participant with a faculty mentor in a one-on-one relationship. A plan is also under review to award a Convergence Medical Sciences Micro-Degree to students who earn the required credits and complete both the Biomedical Research Fundamentals Practicum Camp and the Convergence Medicine Elective Practicum.
The Department of Medical Education will systematically manage each student's progress through a portfolio system. In addition, the program will present a clear, end-to-end pathway for physicianscientists—from research funding for physician-scientist graduate programs after graduation, to postdoctoral research support, and ultimately to priority consideration for faculty appointments. This is the blueprint the program envisions. The initiative also aims to prevent talented physician-scientists from leaving the field due to financial constraints or a lack of institutional support to sustain their research.

Hanyang University has launched the Medical Scientist Training Program to produce physicianscientists—innovative researchers capable of changing the world—embarking on a new challenge.
공학 기반 의학 연구의 으뜸
조만간 기존의 ‘의예과 2년 + 의학과 4년’ 커리큘럼도 6년 통합운영 커리큘럼으로 전환할 예정이다. 통합운영 커리큘럼에서는 기초의학과 임상의학 핵심 교육을 시작하기 전에 의학을 바라보는 다양한 관점을 제공해 학생들의 진로 선택권을 넓혀줄 계획이다. 아울러 임상의학 실습 중간중간에 의학과 자연과학 및 공학을 접목해 공부할 수 있도록 커리큘럼을 개편한다.
“모든 학생에게 획일적인 교육을 하기보다는 사전에 학생 개개인이 어떤 방향의 공부를 하고 싶은지 파악한 뒤, 일부 학생들에게는 깊이 있는 연구를 수행할 수 있는 교육을 병행할 방침입니다. 연구에 전념하고자 하는 학생은 확실하게 지원해야 한다고 생각해요. 한양인들이 개인의 영달보다 인류의 번영에 이바지할 연구에 재미와 보람을 느끼기를 바랍니다.”
특히 한양대는 캠퍼스 안에 병원과 의과대학, 공과대학, 자연대학, 한양생명과학기술원 등 다양한 연구조직을 구축하고 있고, 훌륭한 이공계 연구자들도 다수 확보하고 있다. 이러한 강점을 십분 활용해 아직 국내에 없는 공과대학 기반의 의과대학 연구와 교육을 추구하고자 한다. 그 일환으로, 현재 한양대 의과대학은 전 세계 공과대학 기반의 의학 연구 컨소시엄인 GCIM(Global Consortium of Innovation and Engineering in Medicine) 협의체에 국내 의과대학 최초로 회원 가입을 추진 중이다.
“한양대 의사과학자 양성사업단의 목표는 단발성으로 학생을 지원하다가 끝나는 사업이 아니라, 하나의 생태계로 자리 잡을 수 있는 환경을 만드는 것입니다. 또 궁극적으로는 공학을 중심으로 한 의학 연구는 ‘한양 의대’가 최고라는 인식을 확산시키겠습니다.”
앞으로 5년 후면, 한양대 의사과학자 양성 사업을 통해 훈련된 의사과학자가 본격적으로 배출될 것이다. 그리고 10년 후, 현재의 의예과 1학년 학생들이 교수 임용을 앞두고 있을 시점에는 의사과학자들을 기초 및 임상의학 교수로 임용하고, 기술이전과 특허, 창업, 신약 임상 진입 같은 성과들을 가시화하게 될 것이다. 의미 있는 대장정을 향해 첫발을 내디딘 사업단의 힘찬 출발을 응원한다.
Excellence in Engineering-Based Medical Research
The current “two-year pre-medicine + four-year medical program” structure is also set to transition soon to a six-year integrated curriculum. Under this new format, the aim is to broaden students' career options by offering diverse perspectives on medicine before they begin core education in basic and clinical medicine. The curriculum will also be restructured to allow students to study medicine in conjunction with the natural sciences and engineering at various points throughout their clinical practicum.
“Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all education, we plan to first identify the goals and interests of each student, and then give those who are drawn to research the opportunity to pursue it alongside their studies. I believe students who want to dedicate themselves to research deserve dedicated support. My hope is that Hanyangians will find joy and purpose in research that contributes to the prosperity of humanity rather than to personal gain.”
In particular, Hanyang University has built a rich ecosystem of research organizations on its campus—including the university hospital, College of Medicine, College of Engineering, College of Natural Sciences, and HY Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (HY-IBB)—and has secured a large number of outstanding science and engineering researchers. By fully leveraging these strengths, the university aims to pursue engineering-centered medical research and education—a model not yet seen in Korea. As part of this effort, Hanyang University College of Medicine is currently pursuing membership in the Global Consortium of Innovation and Engineering in Medicine (GCIM), a global consortium of engineering-school-based medical research, which would make it the first Korean medical school to join.
“The goal of the Hanyang University Medical Scientist Training Program is not to offer one-time student support and call it done—it is to build an environment where the program can take root as a self-sustaining ecosystem. And ultimately, we will work to establish the recognition that 'Hanyang Medical School' is the leader in engineering-centered medical research.”
In five years' time, physician-scientists trained through the program will begin to emerge in earnest. Ten years from now, when today's first-year pre-medicine students are on the verge of faculty appointments, physician-scientists will be taking up positions as professors in basic and clinical medicine, with tangible outcomes— technology transfers, patents, startups, and entries into new drug clinical trials—coming into clear view. We look forward to following the program's progress as it takes these first bold steps toward this meaningful and ambitious journey.
