이제 인류는 100세 시대를 넘어 120세 시대를 바라보고 있다. 우리의 생존과 건강을 책임질 의료, 바이오, 헬스케어 분야는 인공지능(AI)과 빅데이터, 사물 인터넷(IoT), 웨어러블 등 첨단 과학기술과 접목되며 크게 성장하는 중이다. 이에 따라 임상과 공학 두 가지 영역에 대한 지식과 경험을 두루 갖춘 ‘의사과학자’나 의학과 공학, 데이터사이언스 분야 간의 학문적 방법론, 기술 등을 상호 교환, 응용할 수 있는 ‘의공학자’에 대한 관심도 증가하는 추세다. 의사과학자나 의공학자는 질병 치료제 및 의약품, 의료기기, 인공장기 개발 등과 같은 미래지향적 고부가가치 산업을 창출하고, 인류의 복지 향상에 큰 영향력을 발휘할 수 있다. 차세대 의료 시스템과 미래 의료산업 발전에 필수적인 의사과학자와 의공학자에 대해 알아본다.
Humanity is now looking beyond the era of 100-year lifespans toward the possibility of living to 120. The fields of medicine, biomedicine, and healthcare—upon which our survival and well-being depend—are growing rapidly through integration with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable devices. In line with this, there is growing interest in “physician-scientists,” who bring deep knowledge and experience in both clinical practice and scientific research, and “biomedical engineers,” who can bridge and apply the methodologies and tools of medicine, engineering, and data science across disciplines. Physician-scientists and biomedical engineers are uniquely positioned to create high-value, future-facing industries, including the development of disease therapies, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and artificial organs, while also contributing significantly to the advancement of human welfare.
