학문의 경계를 넘어 변화를 이끄는 융합적 역량의 중요성이 커지고 있다. 학생 중심 수업, IC-PBL, 빅 퀘스천 교육 등 대학 교육의 혁신을 이끌어 온 한양대학교가 2025학년도부터 한양인터칼리지를 신설했다. 핵심은 ‘융합’과 ‘연결’. 다양한 학과 지식이 시너지를 내는 미래지향적 시스템을 구축했다. 한양대가 추구하는 경계 없는 배움에 대해 알아보자.

The importance of convergence capabilities that transcend academic boundaries and drive change is growing. Hanyang University, which has led innovations in higher education through student-centered classes, IC-PBL, and Big Question education, established Hanyang Intercollege starting in the 2025 academic year. The core principles are “convergence” and “connection.” The university has built a future-oriented system where knowledge from various departments creates synergy. Let us explore the boundaryless learning that Hanyang University pursues.

미래가 원하는 리더는 창의적인 융합형 인재

“우리나라는 그동안 패스트 팔로워로서 눈부신 발전을 이뤘습니다. 하지만 현재 첨단 원천기술을 가진 선진국들의 압박과 아래에서 치고 올라오는 경쟁국들의 압박으로 이중 위기에 처했죠. 이제는 퍼스트 무버로서 새로운 길을 개척해야 합니다. 미래 경쟁에서 우위를 점하려면 독자적 기술을 바탕으로 한 혁신과 차별화, 새로운 산업 영역 개발이 절실합니다. 그리고 우리 사회 곳곳에서 변화를 만들 창의적인 융합형 인재가 필요해요.”

한양인터칼리지 김진수 학장은 국가 발전의 원동력이 되어줄 미래 인재의 중요성을 강조하며, 교육 시스템 역시 변화해야 한다고 지적했다. 한양인터칼리지의 시스템과 지향점에는 미래 인재와 대학 교육에 대한 한양대의 고민과 혜안이 고스란히 담겨 있다. 오늘날 지식을 배우고 익힐 방법과 경로는 다양해졌다. 인구와 사회, 산업 구조도 빠르게 재편되고 있다. 이런 시점에서 대학은 단순히 지식을 제공하는 장소가 아니라, 우리 사회와 세계의 문제를 탐구하고 그 해결책의 모색 과정을 체득하게 하는 혁신 플랫폼이 되어야 한다.

“인터칼리지(Intercollege)는 ‘상호 간의’를 뜻하는 접두사 ‘Inter’와 ‘단과대학’을 뜻하는 ‘College’를 합친 말로, ‘단과대학, 학과 간의 제약 없이 자유롭게 수학할 수 있는 자유전공’을 의미합니다. 기존에도 많은 대학이 자율전공이나 무전공 제도를 도입했지만, 사실 진정한 의미는 아니었죠. 대부분 1학년을 마치고 2학년이 될 때 하나의 전공을 확정하게 하니까요. 하지만 한양인터칼리지에서는 졸업 때까지 다양한 가능성을 열어 두며, 국내 최초의 융합학사 학위를 취득할 수 있습니다.”

한양인터칼리지의 핵심은 적극적인 융합 교육 기반의 전공 자유선택제다. 무전공으로 입학한 학생들은 1학년 공통인 융합기초교육 과정부터 시작해 학문 간 경계를 허무는 배움을 쌓는다. 이렇게 자신의 흥미와 역량을 충분히 파악한 뒤 원하는 전공을 선택해 사회에 진출하게 된다. 주전공뿐 아니라 다전공을 1개 이상 필수로 이수해야 하며, 재학 기간 중 총 2회 주전공 선택 기회가 주어진다. 한양인터칼리지 자체 융합전공인 △미래반도체공학 △융합의과학 △융합의공학 △인지융합과학 △미래사회디자인 △혁신공학경영을 비롯해, 의과대학과 간호학과, 사범대학, 음악대학, 예술·체육대학, 산업체 계약학과를 제외한 한양대 내 모든 학과(학부)가 주전공 및 다전공의 대상이 된다.

The Leaders the Future Demands Are Creative Convergence Talents

“Korea has achieved remarkable development as a fast follower. However, we now face a dual crisis—pressure from advanced nations with cutting-edge core technologies above and rising competitors pushing up from below. It is time to pioneer new paths as a first mover. To gain an edge in future competition, innovation and differentiation based on proprietary technologies, as well as the development of new industrial sectors, are urgently needed. And we need creative convergence talents who can drive change throughout our society.”

Dean Kim Jinsoo of Hanyang Intercollege emphasized the importance of future talents who will serve as the driving force behind national development, noting that the education system must also change. The system and vision of Hanyang Intercollege fully reflect Hanyang University's insights and contemplation on future talents and higher education. Today, we have multiple ways to learn. Population, society, and industrial structures are also being rapidly reorganized. At this juncture, universities must become innovative platforms where students can actively explore problems facing our society and the world and find the solutions, rather than merely being places where students learn passively.

“Intercollege is a combination of the prefix “Inter,” meaning “between” or “mutual,” and “College,” meaning “a school within a university.” It refers to “an open major that allows students to study freely without restrictions between colleges or departments.” Many universities have already introduced autonomous major or undeclared major systems, but they are far from the meaning of “be free to learn.” Most required students to declare their major when they become sophomores. However, at Hanyang Intercollege, students can develop their potentials until graduation and earn Korea's first convergence bachelor's degree.”

The core of Hanyang Intercollege is a free major selection system based on proactive convergence education. Students who enter without a declared major will begin with the convergence foundation education curriculum common to all freshmen, building knowledge that breaks down boundaries between disciplines. After fully understanding their interests and capabilities, they can select their desired major to become a member of society. Students must complete at least one additional major in addition to their primary major, and they are given two opportunities to select their primary major during their enrollment. In addition to Hanyang Intercollege's own convergence majors—Semiconductor Engineering Future, Medicine Future, Medical Convergence Engineering, Cognitive Convergence Science, Future Society Design, and Innovation Engineering and Management—all departments (schools) within Hanyang University, except for the College of Medicine, Department of Nursing, College of Education, College of Music, College of Performing Arts and Sport, and industry-contracted departments, are available as primary or additional majors.

시대를 선도할 체인지메이커가 필요하다고 강조하는 김진수 학장은 한양인터칼리지가 새로운 융합 교육으로 세상에 질문을 던지고 긍정적인 반향을 일으킬 것이라 자신했다. 융합 교육을 위한 혁신 시스템 구축

“촘촘하게 짜인 시스템을 통해 하나의 전공만을 탐험하는 일차원적인 인재가 아닌, 사회와 산업이 원하는 입체적인 융합형 인재를 키우고자 합니다. 다양한 산업체, 연구기관과 함께하는 커리큘럼도 잘 짜여 있어요. 또 1학년 수업을 모두 100% 영어로 진행하고, 해외 명문 대학과 연구 프로젝트를 진행하는 등 글로벌 경쟁력도 배양할 수 있습니다.”

진정한 융합 교육을 실현하려면 교육하는 시스템도 달라야 할 터. 한양인터칼리지는 1학년 교육과정 전체를 재설계했을 뿐 아니라 기존과 다른 새로운 커리큘럼을 구성했다. 또 융합전공 전체를 관장하는 주임교수를 두고, 여러 교수가 섹션별 강연자로 지식을 공급하는 커뮤니티 클래스를 기본으로 삼았다. 주전공 선택 시 석차나 평균 평점을 기준으로 한 정원 제한, 선택 제한도 없앴다. 대신 특정 전공의 경우 전공 특성에 맞춘 선이수 교과목 요건을 설정했다. 더불어 학생들이 새로운 학문에 과감히 도전하도록 S/U(Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) 및 I(Incomplete) 등급 제도를 성적평가 방식으로 도입했다.

이뿐만 아니라 전공 자유선택제로 인한 신입생의 혼란을 최소화하고 체계적으로 지원하고자 다양한 FYE(First Year Experience) 및 특화 상담 제도를 마련했다. 대학 생활 안정과 개인적 성장을 돕는 ‘라이프 프로젝트(Life Project)’와 ‘메이크 코어(Make Core)’, 영어 능력 향상을 지원하는 ‘스파크(SPARK)’ 등의 교육과정이 준비돼 있다. 더불어 학생들에게 행정과 교육 두 가지 소속을 부여해 주전공 선택 후에도 한양인터칼리지의 지원을 받게 했다.

“행정팀 외에 라이프디자인센터와 첨단실습지원센터를 별도의 조직으로 두고 학생들을 지원하고 있습니다. 또 법학학술정보관 2~4층에 커넥티드 강의실과 미팅룸, 라운지, 전시실 등 한양인터칼리지 학생만을 위한 별도의 교육 공간을 마련했죠. 최근에는 HIT 4층에 학생들이 창의적인 아이디어를 자유롭게 실현할 수 있는 제작 공간으로 ‘메이커스페이스’도 오픈했습니다.”

이렇게 탁월한 시스템과 인프라 덕분인지 한양인터칼리지는 신설된 직후부터 큰 주목을 받았다. 2026학년도 수시 경쟁률은 42.6:1로, 2년 연속 서울 소재 대학 무전공 학과 수시 경쟁률 중 가장 높은 기록을 차지했다.

Building an Innovative System for Convergence Education

“Through a meticulously designed system, we aim to cultivate multidimensional, convergence-oriented talents that society and industry demand, rather than one-dimensional talents who explore only a single major. We also have well-structured curricula developed in collaboration with various industries and research institutions. Additionally, all freshman courses are conducted 100% in English, and thus, students can cultivate global competitiveness through research projects with prestigious overseas universities.”

To realize true convergence education, the teaching system must also be changed. Hanyang Intercollege not only redesigned the entire freshman curriculum but also structured a new curriculum different from the existing one. The college appointed program directors to oversee each convergence major and adopted community classes as a foundation, where multiple professors serve as section lecturers to deliver knowledge. When choosing their primary major, enrollment caps and selection restrictions based on class rank or GPA are no longer considered as well. Instead, specific majors require students to fulfill prerequisite course requirements tailored to the characteristics. Furthermore, a grading system of “S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory)” and “I (Incomplete)” was introduced to encourage students to boldly take on challenges in new academic fields.

In addition, various FYE (First Year Experience) and specialized advising programs were established to minimize confusion among freshmen due to the free major selection system and provide systematic support. Educational programs such as “Life Project” and “Make Core,” which help stabilize university life and support personal growth, and “SPARK,” which supports English proficiency improvement, are in place. Furthermore, students are given dual affiliations in both administration and education, allowing them to continue receiving support from Hanyang Intercollege even after selecting their primary major.

“In addition to the administrative team, we have established the Life Design Center and the Advanced Practice Support Center as separate organizations to support students. We have also set up dedicated educational spaces exclusively for Hanyang Intercollege students on the 2nd to 4th floors of the Law Library, including connected classrooms, meeting rooms, lounges, and exhibition rooms. Recently, we also opened a “Makerspace” on the 4th floor of the HIT building as an insightful space where students can freely realize their creative ideas.”

Thanks to this outstanding system and infrastructure, Hanyang Intercollege has attracted significant attention since its establishment. The early admission competition ratio for the 2026 academic year was 42.6:1, marking the highest early admission competition ratio among undeclared major programs at Seoul-based universities for two consecutive years.

시야와 생각을 넓히는 ‘미래사회디자인전공’

김진수 학장은 현재 미래사회디자인전공 주임교수로도 활동 중이다. 미래사회디자인전공은 우리나라의 미래, 인류의 지속 가능한 미래를 향한 고민에서 출발한 융합전공이다. 기후 위기와 인공지능 대전환, 산업-에너지 대전환, 저출생과 고령사회, 지역 균형발전, 지속 가능한 도시 등 21세기 인류가 직면한 난제에 종합적 비전을 설정하고 다학제적인 해결 방안을 제시할 수 있는 인재를 양성하고자 한다.

“미래사회디자인전공에는 제 경험이 투영돼 있습니다. 저는 지구환경과 에너지시스템공학을 전공한 공대 교수지만, 지금은 에너지 자원 경제와 정책을 연구하며 관련 사회활동을 많이 하고 있어요. 우리가 당면한 과제는 하나의 지식이나 하나의 해결책만으로는 해소할 수 없습니다. 다학제, 초학문적 접근이 필요하죠. 제가 걸어온 길을 되짚어 보며 학생들의 시야를 열어주고 싶다는 생각이 컸습니다.”

미래사회디자인전공을 선택한 학생들은 인류 난제의 탐구와 실질적 해결에 필요한 경제, 경영, 사회, 법학 지식과 더불어 사회 인프라, 미래 기술 등 공학적 해결책을 함께 학습하게 된다. 다양한 분야가 섞여 있어 얕은 배움을 걱정할 수 있지만, 그만큼 폭넓은 지식으로 시야를 넓힌다. 정부 기관이나 국제기구의 행정관, 사회활동가, 사회적기업 CEO, 법학이나 정치, 사회학 연구자 등 다양한 진로를 통해 미래 변화를 주도할 수 있다.

“우리는 계속 변화하려고 노력해야 합니다. 지식과 지혜를 서로 엮고 주도적으로 변화를 만들어가는 체인지메이커가 돼야 해요. 한양인들이 유연한 사고와 열린 마음으로 세상을 탐구하는 인재, 안전지대에서 벗어나 미지의 것을 수용할 수 있는 인재, 경계를 초월한 현상학적 경험으로 세상을 바꾸는 글로벌 탐험가가 되길 바랍니다. 그리고 한양인터칼리지가 새로운 융합 교육으로 세상에 질문을 던지고 긍정적인 반향을 일으키는 역할을 하리라 기대합니다.”

The “Major in Future Society Design” That Broadens Perspectives and Insights

Dean Kim Jinsoo currently also serves as program director of the Major in Future Society Design. It is a convergence major that originated from concerns about Korea's future and humanity's sustainable future. It aims to cultivate convergence talents who can establish comprehensive visions and propose multidisciplinary solutions to the grand challenges facing humanity in the 21st century, including the climate crisis, the AI transformation, the industrial-energy transition, low birth rates and aging society, balanced regional development, and sustainable cities.

“The Major in Future Society Design reflects my own experience. I am an engineering professor who majored in earth environment and energy systems engineering, but now I research energy resource economics and policy and am actively engaged in related social activities. The challenges we face cannot be resolved with just one single-sided knowledge or solution. A multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach is crucial. Looking back on the path I have walked, I had a strong desire to broaden students' perspectives.”

Students who choose the Major in Future Society Design learn not only economics, business administration, social sciences, and legal knowledge necessary for exploring and practically solving humanity's grand challenges, but also engineering solutions such as social infrastructure and future technologies. While some may worry about superficial learning due to the entanglement of diverse fields, students can broaden their perspectives with equally wide-ranging knowledge. They can lead future changes through various career paths, including government agency or international organization administrators, social activists, social enterprise CEOs, and researchers in law, political science, or sociology.

“We must continue striving to change. We must become changemakers who interweave knowledge and wisdom and proactively drive future change. I hope Hanyang people will become talents who explore the world with flexible insights and open minds, pioneers who can step out of their comfort zones and embrace the unknown, and global explorers who change the world through phenomenological experiences that transcend boundaries. And I expect Hanyang Intercollege to play a role in posing questions to the world through its new convergence education and affect the world positively.”
