Alvin Toffler, renowned for works such as Future Shock, The Third Wave, and Revolutionary Wealth, was a futurist who analyzed changes in technology, economy, and culture to present the direction of tomorrow. He foresaw that following the first wave of the Agricultural Revolution and the second wave of the Industrial Revolution, the third wave—the Information Revolution—would transform human history. Although his books were written between the 1970s and the early 2000s, they depict the present landscape almost precisely, including remote work, AI technology, and the proliferation of content creators.

What was the secret behind his pinpoint predictions of the future? Alvin Toffler worked as a welder at an aluminum production factory for five years before expanding his activities to become a labor and political affairs journalist, associate editor of the business magazine Fortune, and visiting professor at Cornell University. By weaving together the diverse field experiences and knowledge he accumulated through convergent thinking, he read the currents of the times ahead of others.

Convergence refers to “the process of different things melting together to become indistinguishably unified, or making them so.” It is the power to create something new by connecting different fields and different data. Convergent thinking and convergence capabilities are particularly regarded as important topics in cultivating talents who will pioneer an uncertain future.
