17년 이상의 교육 경험으로 현재 간호대학 교수로 재직 중인 여지영 교수가 건넨 명함에는 CEO라는 또 다른 직책이 새겨져 있다. 인공지능(AI)과 확장현실(XR)이라는 첨단기술을 간호 교육에 접목한 실험실 창업 기업 ‘널싱엑스알(Nursing XR)’을 이끌고 있기 때문이다. 2022년 설립 이래 연구개발에만 전념했으니 이제는 결실을 보아야 할 때. 앞으로의 시간이 더욱 기대되는 널싱엑스알을 찾았다.

With 17 years of experience in education, Professor Ji-Young Yeo currently teaches at the Department of Nursing. But the business card she hands out bears another title: CEO. She is at the helm of Nursing XR, a startup company that integrates cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR), into nursing education. Since its founding in 2022, the company has focused solely on research and development. Now, it is time to reap their rewards. Hence, we visited Nursing XR, a company with a promising future ahead.

위기가 낳은 창업의 기회

일정 시간 이상의 실습을 이수해야 간호사 국가고시 응시 자격이 주어지는 간호학과 학생들은 이론과 실습 교육을 병행한다. 하지만 환자 안전을 우선하기에 관찰 위주의 실습을 진행하는 경우가 많다. 이러한 상황에서 2020년 코로나 팬데믹까지 발발해 간호 실습 교육은 관찰조차도 어려운 여건에 처했다.

“간호학은 단지 지식과 기술만으로 완성되지 않습니다. 대상자와 마주하는 표정, 태도, 존중과 공감에 기반한 의사소통 등이 중요하죠. 하지만 교과서나 강의실 교육만으로는 이러한 역량을 충분히 길러주기 어렵습니다. 그렇지 않아도 전통적 교육 방식의 한계를 어떻게 극복해야 할지 고민하던 차에 코로나19가 발생해 적극적으로 대안을 찾아야 했습니다.”

여지영 교수는 가상현실 기술에 주목했다. 즉, 가상현실 속에 병실 현장을 구현한 후 환자와 대화하며 라포(상호신뢰)를 형성하고 투약, 주사 등의 처치를 실습하는 것이다. 구상에 그칠 게 아니라 실제 수업에 활용해야겠다고 마음먹은 여지영 교수는 교내 연구자를 대상으로 열리는 ‘한양 이노베이션 어워즈(HY Innovation Awards)’에 도전, 우수상을 받아 2천만 원의 상금을 수상했다. 이때만 해도 그저 학생들을 위해 교육 솔루션을 개발하려는 것이 목적이었는데, 이는 훗날 창업의 시드머니가 된다.

“컴퓨터소프트웨어학부 박종일 교수님의 ‘가상현실연구실’에 연구계획서를 들고 가서 연구원을 지원받았습니다. 몇 달 동안 밤잠을 설치며 단순한 시나리오를 구동하는 정도까지 개발했는데 실습에 활용하기에는 무리가 있었습니다.”

A Startup Opportunity Born from Crisis

To qualify for the National Nursing Licensing Examination, nursing students must complete nearly 1,000 hours of mandated clinical practicum, requiring a curriculum that integrates rigorous theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on training. However, due to the priority placed on patient safety, clinical training often focuses primarily on observation. In this context, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further exacerbated the situation, making it difficult even to observe clinical nursing training.

“Nursing is not complete with knowledge and technical skills alone. Facial expressions and attitudes when interacting with patients, as well as communications based on respect and empathy, are all crucial. However, these qualities are difficult to cultivate through textbooks or classroom lectures alone. Even before the pandemic, we were already grappling with how to overcome the limitations of traditional educational methods. COVID-19 compelled us to actively seek alternative solutions.”

Professor Ji-Young Yeo saw potential in virtual reality (VR) technology. Her idea was to simulate a hospital room within a VR environment, where students could interact with patients to build rapport and practice clinical procedures such as medication administration and injections. Determined not to let the idea remain theoretical but to apply it in actual classes, she applied for the “HY Innovation Awards,” a competition for Hanyang researchers. She won the Excellence Award and received a prize of KRW 20 million. At the time, her sole intention was to develop an educational solution for students, but this later became the seed funding for her startup.

“I brought my research proposal to Professor Jong-Il Park’s “Virtual Reality Lab” in the Department of Computer Science and received support from a research assistant. After several months of sleepless nights, I managed to develop a basic simulation that could run a simple scenario, but it still wasn’t suitable for practical training.”

널싱엑스알은 2024~2025년 2년 연속으로 세계 최대 가전·IT 전시회인 CES에 참가하며 해외시장 진출의 가능성을 확인했다. Nursing XR demonstrated its potential for global expansion by participating in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)—the world’s largest electronics and IT exhibition—for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025.

실험실 창업 지원사업으로 창업 본격화

해가 바뀌고 또다시 봄이 찾아왔으나 코로나19의 기승은 여전했다. 이왕 시작한 개발이니 실제 수업에 활용할 수 있을 정도로 완성도를 높여야겠다는 일념으로 이번에는 ‘실험실특화형 창업선도대학 지원사업’에 응모했다. 사업에 선정된 여지영 교수는 4900만 원의 지원금을 받아 연구를 발전시켰고, 2022년 교내실습 수업에서 드디어 20분 분량의 시나리오를 적용할 수 있게 됐다.

“여전히 만족스럽지 않은 상태였으나 마네킹을 대상으로 실습해야 했던 학생들의 반응은 매우 뜨거웠습니다. ‘뭔가 환자의 반응이 오고 내가 간호사가 된 것처럼 뭔가를 해줄 수 있다는 것이 좋아요’라며 가상현실 실습에 대한 만족감을 표출하는 학생들이 많았죠. 후배들을 위해 더 잘 만들어달라는 격려에 큰 힘을 얻었습니다.”

창업은 생각해 본 적도 없는 여지영 교수였지만, 실험실 창업 지원사업의 지원을 받은 만큼 창업이라는 일생일대의 도전이 시작됐다. 그리하여 2022년 탄생한 실험실 창업 기업이 ‘널싱엑스알’이다. 널싱엑스알의 실감형 시뮬레이션 교육 프로그램은 3D 기술을 탑재해 VR(가상현실), AR(증강현실), MR(혼합현실) 등 다양한 확장현실을 활용한 교육적 시도를 지속했다. 하지만 널싱엑스알의 진짜 강점은 다른 데 있다. 간호학 교수가 제자들을 위해 직접 개발했기에 여타 콘텐츠들과는 개발 목적부터 달랐다.

“당시 코로나 팬데믹 시기를 맞아 VR 교육 콘텐츠들이 출시되기 시작했습니다. 하지만 대부분 기술을 가르치는 데 치중했죠. 저는 간호학 교수로서 기술뿐 아니라 환자를 존중하고 공감하는 태도까지 교육할 수 있는 인간 중심의 돌봄 교육을 실현하고 싶었습니다.”

이를테면 주사를 놓을 때 바늘의 각도 등 단순히 기술적 숙련도만 평가하는 게 아니라, 환자가 느끼는 감정을 중심으로 알고리즘을 설계했다. 환자의 팔을 잘 지지하고 바늘을 뺄 때 주의를 기울이는지 실습자의 세심한 태도를 체크하고, 더 나아가 환자 보호자까지 안심시키는 공감의 의사소통 역량까지 평가하는 통합적인 교육 콘텐츠를 개발하고자 했다. 기술이 발전할수록 더욱 따뜻하고 인간적인 기술을 지향하는 것, 대상자와 헬스케어 전문가 간에 더 깊은 소통과 공감을 끌어내는 콘텐츠를 만드는 것이 널싱엑스알의 목표다.

Launching a Full-Scale Startup through Lab-Based Startup Support Program

A new year began and spring returned once again, but the COVID-19 pandemic showed no signs of slowing down. Having already begun development, Professor Ji-Young Yeo was determined to enhance its quality to a level suitable for actual classroom use, and thus applied for the “Lab-Based Startup Leading University Support Program.” After being selected, she received KRW 49 million in funding, which allowed her to advance the research. By 2022, she was finally able to implement a 20-minute scenario in an on-campus practicum course.

“Although the system was still not fully satisfactory, the response from students who had previously practiced only on mannequins was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed their satisfaction with the VR training, saying things like, ‘I really like that I can get some kind of reaction from the patient and feel like I’m actually doing something as a nurse.’ I was greatly encouraged by their support urging me to improve it further for future students.”

Although Professor Ji-Young Yeo had never considered starting a business, receiving support from the Lab-Based Startup Support Program marked the beginning of a once-in-a-lifetime entrepreneurial challenge. This led to the founding of the labbased startup “Nursing XR” in 2022. Nursing XR’s immersive simulation training program, built with 3D technology, has continuously pursued educational initiatives utilizing various forms of XR, including VR, augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). However, Nursing XR’s real strength lies elsewhere. Because it was developed directly by a nursing professor for their students, its development purpose fundamentally differed from that of other content.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, VR-based educational content began to emerge. However, most of it focused primarily on teaching the technology itself. As a nursing professor, I wanted to implement human-centered care education that not only teaches technical skills but also fosters attitudes of respect and empathy toward patients.”

For example, instead of merely assessing technical proficiency, such as the angle of the needle during an injection, the algorithm was designed to focus on the patient’s emotional experience. They aimed to develop integrated educational content that evaluates not only the practitioner’s attentiveness—such as properly supporting the patient’s arm and carefully removing the needle—but also their empathetic communication skills that reassure even the patient’s caregivers. As technology advances, Nursing XR aims to pursue warmer, more human-centered technologies and to create content that deepens communication and empathy between patients and healthcare professionals.

여지영 교수는 역량 있는 간호 인재 양성에 기여하겠다는 교육자로서의 열망으로 널싱엑스알 창업을 추진했다. Professor Ji-Young Yeo launched Nursing XR, driven by her passion as an educator to nurture competent nursing professionals.

글로벌 AI 헬스케어 교육 콘텐츠로 발전

“통합적인 교육 콘텐츠는 고도화된 기술력을 요해 창업패키지 지원사업 등 교내외의 다양한 지원사업을 통해 추가 연구자금을 조달했습니다. 아울러 경영이나 마케팅 영역은 생소하다 보니 홍보물 제작 지원, IR덱(IR Deck) 구성법 등 창업지원단이나 기술사업화센터 등 학교에서 운영하는 프로그램은 무조건 참여해 성장의 기회로 삼았습니다.”

2024년에는 인공지능 기술까지 탑재해 감성 커뮤니케이션 중심의 경험학습을 기반으로 설계된 상호작용 콘텐츠로 향상시켰다. 학습자별 행동과 음성 데이터를 실시간 분석해 학습자의 간호 수행 수준에 역동적으로 반응하는 적응형 교육 시스템으로 발전시킨 것이다. 이렇게 개발된 ‘AI 커넥트 널스(AI Connect Nurse)’를 2024년부터 3개 대학에서 시범 운영하고, 2024~2025년 연속으로 세계 최대 가전·IT 전시회인 CES에 참가했다. 이는 해외시장 진출의 가능성을 확인하고 미래 로드맵을 구체화하는 시간이 됐다. 현재 널싱엑스알은 중동 지역의 AI 전문기업과 전략적 협력을 체결해 다국어 버전 개발 등 글로벌 표준화를 추진하고자 한다. 또한 글로벌 협업 프로그램(엔업 프로그램)에도 선정돼 기술 고도화를 추진할 예정이다.

“저는 아무런 준비 없이 창업해 많은 시행착오를 겪었습니다. 창업에 관심이 있어도 기술이나 아이템에만 집중하는 경향이 있는데 창업하면 부수적으로 필요한 것들이 많습니다. 만약 실험실 창업에 관심이 있다면 창업지원단의 프로그램들을 적극 활용하기를 권합니다. 더 많은 연구자가 한양대학교의 창업생태계를 기반으로 삼아 연구자로서의 문제의식으로 혁신을 이루고 사회적 가치를 실현할 수 있기를 희망합니다.”

우연히 뛰어든 창업. 포기하지 않을 수 있었던 것은 간호의 본질을 실현하겠다는 진심과 학생들에게 더 좋은 교육을 제공하겠다는 열정이 바탕이 되었기 때문이다. 현재 널싱엑스알은 창업 이래 가장 힘든 시기를 지나는 중이지만, 요양보호사 교육이라는 새로운 시장을 발굴해 연말에 요양보호사 교육 콘텐츠를 출시할 계획이다. 글로벌 고령화 시대의 흐름에 맞춰 헬스케어 요구가 증가하면서 다양한 헬스케어 인력 교육이 그만큼 중요해지고 있기 때문이다.

“현재 추진 중인 요양보호사 시장 진출을 성공적으로 마친 후 간호 및 다양한 헬스케어 분야로 영역을 확장할 계획입니다. 그리고 아시아, 중동, 북미를 아우르는 글로벌 표준 AI 헬스케어 교육 콘텐츠를 제공하고자 합니다. 더 나아가 향후 도래할 디지털 병원 시대에 대비해 지역사회와 디지털 병원을 연계하는 헬스케어 플랫폼으로 발전시키는 것이 목표입니다.”

널싱엑스알과 함께 기업가로서 성장하고 있는 여지영 교수. 인간 중심의 돌봄을 구현하는 역량 있는 간호 인재 양성에 기여하겠다는 교육자로서의 열망이 강의실을 넘어 넓은 세상으로 뻗어나가고 있다.

Evolving into Global AI Healthcare Educational Content

“Developing integrated content demanded higher-end technology, so we secured additional research funding through various internal and external support programs, such as the Startup Package Support Program. Furthermore, since we were unfamiliar with areas like business management and marketing, we actively participated in all university-run programs—such as promotional material production support and training on how to structure an Investor Relations (IR) Deck—through the Institute for Entrepreneurship and the Technology Commercialization Center. These served as invaluable opportunities for growth.”

In 2024, Nursing XR enhanced its system by incorporating AI technology, transforming it into interactive content designed around experiential learning focused on emotional communication. The platform evolved into an adaptive educational system that analyzes each learner’s behavior and voice data in real time, dynamically responding to their level of nursing performance. The resulting program, “AI Connect Nurse,” began pilot implementation at three universities in 2024 and was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s largest electronics and IT exhibition, for two consecutive years from 2024 to 2025. This served as an opportunity to validate the potential for entering international markets and to refine their future roadmap. Currently, Nursing XR is pursuing global standardization by forming a strategic partnership with a Middle Eastern AI company to develop multicultural nursing content. The company has also been selected for 2025 global collaboration program (N-Up Program) and plans to advance its technology.

“I started my business without any preparation and experienced many trials and errors. Many aspiring founders fixate on technology or product alone, yet a successful startup demands far more. If you are considering a lab-based startup, I encourage you to actively utilize the programs offered by the Institute for Entrepreneurship. I hope that more researchers will leverage Hanyang University’s startup ecosystem, using their research-driven mindset to drive innovation and realize social value.”

Nursing XR was founded by chance. What enabled Professor Yeo to keep going was her genuine commitment to realizing the essence of nursing and her passion for providing better education to students. Although the company is currently facing its most challenging period since its founding, it is preparing to launch caregiver training content by the end of the year, having identified a new market in caregiver education. With global population ageing accelerating and healthcare needs rising in tandem, the upskilling of a diverse healthcare workforce has become more essential than ever.

“Once we successfully enter the caregiver market, we plan to expand into nursing and various other healthcare sectors. We will expand into nursing and other healthcare domains, supplying AI-driven, globally standardised training across Asia, the Middle East, and North America. Ultimately, we aspire to build a healthcare platform that links community-based care to digital hospitals, anticipating the next wave of digital health.”

As Nursing XR grows, so does Professor Ji-Young Yeo as an entrepreneur. Her passion as an educator to train competent nursing professionals capable of delivering humancentered care is extending beyond the classroom into the broader world.
