경계를 허무는 융합 연구
The Driving Force Transforming the Future:
Convergence Research That Breaks Down Boundaries
첨단 과학기술은 인류의 내일을 바꿀 열쇠이자 국가 경쟁력과 경제 도약을 위한 방향타, 나침반이다. 그렇기에 전 세계가 치열하게 경쟁하며 천문학적인 예산을 쏟는 것이다. 우리 정부 역시 첨단기술 연구의 중요성에 절감하고 있다. 지난 8월 정부는 ‘2026년도 국가연구개발사업 예산 배분·조정안(이재명 정부 K-R&D 이니셔티브)’을 심의·의결했다. 책정된 내년도 국가 R&D 예산은 역대 최대 규모인 35조 3000억 원. 올해 예산인 29조 6000억 원보다 19.3% 증가한 규모다. 정부는 확실한 투자로 R&D 생산성 대도약과 미래 전략 산업 육성을 지원하는 ‘기술주도 성장’을 강조하며, 인공지능과 에너지, 전략기술, 방산, 중소벤처 분야 지원을 강화하겠다고 밝혔다.
이처럼 실질적인 지원으로 R&D 생태계 확립을 이끄는 것은 무척 중요한 일이다. 하지만 여기에 그쳐서는 안 된다. 인류가 직면한 다양한 문제를 해결하고 지속 가능한 발전을 모색하기 위해서는 창의적인 아이디어와 새로운 도전이 필요하기 때문이다. 따라서 우리에게 절실한 것은, 서로 다른 뿌리를 가진 학문들이 경계 없이 어우러지며 새로운 성과로 확장되는 ‘융합 연구’다.
한양대학교는 미래 기술 개발에 힘쓰는 한편, 더 혁신적인 성과를 도출하기 위해 여러 분야의 연구자가 참여하는 융합 연구를 적극적으로 추진하고 있다. 지난 3월에 개원한 ‘HY-집단융합연구원’은 인공지능, 양자, 국방 등 미래 전략 분야에서 국가적 과제에 해결책을 제시하는 실천적 연구 플랫폼이 될 전망이다.
Advanced science and technology are the key to transforming humanity’s future while serving as the steering wheel and compass for enhancing national competitiveness and achieving economic growth. This is why nations worldwide are engaged in fierce competition, investing astronomical budgets in these critical fields. Our government, too, recognizes the importance of advanced technology research. Last August, the government reviewed and approved the “2026 National R&D Project Budget Allocation and Adjustment Plan (Lee Jae-myung Administration’s K-R&D Initiative).” Next year’s national R&D budget has been set at KRW 35.3 trillion—an unprecedented amount representing a 19.3% increase from this year’s KRW 29.6 trillion. The government emphasized “technology-driven growth,” supporting a quantum leap in R&D productivity and fostering future strategic industries through firm investment, announcing strengthened support for artificial intelligence (AI), energy, strategic technologies, defense, and small-to-medium enterprises and startups.
It is extremely important to lead the establishment of the R&D ecosystem through such substantial support, yet we cannot stop here. Solving humanity’s diverse challenges and pursuing sustainable development requires creative ideas and bold new approaches. What we urgently need is “convergence research”—where academic disciplines of different backgrounds seamlessly integrate across traditional boundaries to generate groundbreaking discoveries.
Hanyang University, while focusing on advancing future technology development, is also actively pursuing convergence research by encouraging participation from researchers in multiple disciplines to achieve breakthrough innovations. The “HY-Collective Convergence Research Institute,” established last March, is positioned to become a dynamic research platform that addresses national challenges in future strategic fields, including AI, quantum technology, and defense.
