Nurturing Future Unicorn Companies
with Korea’s Leading Lab-Based Startup Infrastructure

국내 실험실 창업기업 중 고성장기업(3년 매출 및 상용근로자가 20% 이상 성장한 기업) 비율은 31.6%로 전체 기업의 고성장기업 비율(2.2%)보다 월등히 높다. 그만큼 우리 산업 발전에 기여한다는 뜻이다. 실험실 창업의 중요성이 커지는 가운데 한양대학교가 ‘2025년도 실험실 특화형 창업선도대학 사업’에 선정돼 기대를 모은다. 창업지원단의 류창완 단장을 만났다.

The proportion of high-growth enterprises (defined as those with over 20% growth in revenue and full-time employees over the last three years) among domestic lab-based startups is 31.6%, which is significantly higher than the overall high-growth enterprise rate of 2.2%. This indicates a substantial contribution of lab-based startups to Korea’s industrial advancements. As the importance of lab-based startups continues to grow, Hanyang University has been selected for the “2025 Lab-Based Startup Leading University Program,” raising expectations for the future. Hence, we had an interview with Chang-wan Ryoo, Director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship.

향후 2년간 실험실 창업 국고 지원받아

꿈의 배터리로 불리는 전고체 배터리 전해질을 개발하는 ‘솔리비스(신소재공학부 신동욱 교수)’, 전신 투여가 가능한 전이암 치료제를 개발하는 ‘진메디신(생명공학과 윤채옥 교수)’, 전기자동차용 고성능 양극재를 개발하는 ‘배터리솔루션(에너지공학과 선양국 교수)’, 줄기세포를 활용한 체외 적혈구 생산 기술로 인공혈액 상용화를 앞당기고 있는 ‘아트블러드(의학과 백은정 교수)’, 인공지능(AI)과 확장현실(XR) 기술을 접목해 차세대 보건의료 교육 솔루션을 제공하는 ‘널싱엑스알(간호학과 여지영 교수)’ 등은 모두 한양대의 연구실에서 탄생한 전도유망한 벤처기업들이다. 실험실 창업은 이렇게 연구 성과를 기반으로 사업 아이템을 발굴해 창업에 이르는 것을 말한다.

교육부와 과학기술정보통신부는 대학의 우수한 실험실 기술이 창업까지 이어지도록 지원하기 위해 2018년부터 ‘실험실 특화형 창업선도대학 사업’을 추진하고 있다. 한양대는 올해 ‘실험실 특화형 창업선도대학 사업’의 주관대학으로 선정돼 2026년까지 2년간 총 20억 원의 국고를 지원받는다. 이 사업은 교육부, 과학기술정보통신부, 중소벤처기업부 3개 부처가 협력하여 운영하는 실험실 창업 지원 사업이다. 교육부와 과학기술정보통신부는 예비 혁신창업실을 발굴해 기술 및 시장성 등을 검증하고 R&BD(연구개발성과 사업화) 자금 등을 지원한다. 중소벤처기업부는 ‘창업중심대학 사업’을 통해 후속 사업화 자금, 투자유치, 오픈이노베이션 등 실험실 창업기업의 성장을 지원한다. 창업지원단 류창완 단장은 창업 인프라를 확충하고 연구 성과의 사업화를 더욱 활성화하는 계기가 될 것이라고 강조했다.

“한양대는 중소벤처기업부의 ‘실험실 특화형 창업중심대학 사업’을 2020년 사업 초기부터 수행해 왔습니다. 이번에 교육부·과학기술정보통신부의 2025년도 ‘실험실 특화형 창업선도대학 사업’에 선정되며, 실험실 창업 생태계 조성에 있어 전략적 거점 대학으로서의 위상을 한층 더 강화하게 되었습니다. 앞으로도 한양대는 체계적인 지원 시스템을 바탕으로 실험실 창업을 더욱 활성화하고, 기술 기반 창업의 지속가능한 성장 모델을 선도적으로 구축해 나갈 계획입니다.”

한양대는 일차적으로 사업화 가능성이 있는 ‘예비창업실험실’을 지정한 후 시장성 검토와 사업 모델 수립을 위한 사전 기획비를 지원하고, 이후 창업 실행 역량이 충분한 실험실은 ‘혁신창업실험실’로 선정해 본격적으로 창업 준비를 지원하고 있다. 여기에는 R&BD 자금, 창업 컨설팅, 참여 인력에 대한 수당 등이 포함된다. 이렇게 발굴된 우수 실험실 창업기업은 연 85억 원 규모의 중소벤처기업부 ‘창업중심대학 사업’을 통해 후속 지원을 받아 창업기업의 실질적인 성장(Scale-up) 단계로 나아갈 수 있게 연계지원할 예정이다.

Lab-Based Startups to Receive Government Funding for the Next Two Years

Promising venture companies born from Hanyang University laboratories include: “Solivis (Prof. Dongwook Shin, Division of Materials Science and Engineering),” which develops solid-state battery electrolytes known as the “dream battery;” “GeneMedicine (Prof. Chae-ok Yun, Department of Bioengineering),” which is developing a metastatic cancer treatment suitable for systemic administration; “Battery Solution (Prof. Yangkook Sun, Department of Energy Engineering),” which works on high-performance cathode materials for electric vehicles; “ArtBlood (Prof. Eun-jung Baek, Department of Medicine),” which is accelerating the commercialization of artificial blood through ex vivo red blood cell production using stem cells; and “Nursing XR (Prof. Ji-young Yeo, Department of Nursing),” which offers next-generation healthcare education solutions by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) technologies. Labbased startups refer to the ventures launched by identifying business opportunities based on academic research outcomes.

Since 2018, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) have been jointly promoting the “Lab-Based Startup Leading University Program” to support the commercialization of outstanding university laboratory technologies through venture creation. Hanyang University has been selected as the lead institution for this year’s program and will receive a total of KRW 2 billion in government funding over the next two years, through 2026. This initiative is a collaborative program run by the MOE, MSIT, and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) to support lab-based entrepreneurship. The MOE and MSIT identify prospective innovative startup labs, verify their technological and market feasibility, and provide support such as research and business development (R&BD) funding. The MSS supports the growth of lab-based startups through the “Startup-Centered University Program,” providing follow-up commercialization funding, investment attraction, and open innovation opportunities. Professor Chang-wan Ryoo, Director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship, emphasized that this will serve as a key driver for expanding startup infrastructure and further promoting the commercialization of research outcomes.

“Hanyang University has been implementing the MSS’ “Startup-Centered University Program” since its early stages in 2020. Recently, Hanyang University was selected for the MOE and MSIT’s “2025 Lab-Based Startup Leading University Program,” further solidifying its status as a strategic hub for fostering the laboratory startup ecosystem. Going forward, Hanyang University plans to further promote lab-based startups through an organized support system and take the lead in establishing a sustainable growth model for technology-based entrepreneurship.”

Hanyang University first designates “Pre-Startup Laboratories” that show commercialization potential, providing preliminary planning funds to support market analysis and business model development. Laboratories demonstrating sufficient startup execution capabilities are then selected as “Innovative Startup Laboratories” and receive full-scale support for startup launch. This support includes R&BD funding, startup consulting, and stipends for participating personnel. Outstanding lab-based startups identified through this process will receive follow-up support through the MSS’ “Startup-Centered University Program,” which provides an annual budget of KRW 8.5 billion, enabling them to advance to the scale-up stage of business growth.

명실상부한 국내 최고의 창업 선도 대학으로 손꼽히는 한양대는 창업지원단을 주축으로 창업을 위한 공간과 자금, 컨설팅 등을 지원하고 있다. Hanyang University, widely regarded as Korea’s top university for entrepreneurship, supports startups by offering space, funding, and consulting services through the Institute for Entrepreneurship.

우수한 창업 인프라로 벤처 기업가 육성

한양대는 일찍이 창업 교육과 지원에 힘 쏟아 왔다. 미래 혁신 전략의 세 가지 목표(3S 혁신) 중 하나가 창업과 기술이전을 통해 일자리 창출 및 국가 성장에 기여하는 글로벌 창업가를 육성하는 것일 정도다. 이를 바탕으로 한양대는 ‘학생 창업자 수 1위’, ‘벤처 CEO 배출 1위’ 등의 기록을 보유한, 명실상부 국내 최고의 창업 선도 대학으로 손꼽힌다.

“실용 학풍을 중시하는 한양대는 2009년 국내 대학 최초로 ‘글로벌 기업가 센터’를 설립하고 피동적 창업자 육성이 아닌 능동적 창업자 육성을 시작했습니다. 당시만 해도 창업 교육에 관심을 두는 대학은 없었어요. 하지만 한양대는 기업가 양성이야말로 진정한 국가의 리더를 키우는 것이라는 생각으로, 16년 전에 선행 투자를 단행했습니다. 국내 대학의 창업 교육 수준을 한 단계 끌어올리는 데도 큰 역할을 했다고 자부합니다.”

한양대 내의 창업 교육 및 각종 창업 지원 사업을 운영하는 창업지원단은 창업 준비부터 실행, 성장 그리고 엑시트(Exit)까지, 창업의 전 주기에 걸쳐 자금, 인프라, 공간, 멘토링 등 맞춤형 지원 체계를 구축하고 있다. 창업 단계별 교육과정 운영은 물론이고 창업경진대회와 창업동아리 그리고 창업 현장 실습, 창업 휴학, 창업 장학금 등 창업 친화적 학사제도를 운영 중이다. 또 전액 장학금으로 생활하며 창업에 전념할 수 있도록 ‘247 스타트업 돔’이라는 창업 기숙사를 운영하고 있다. 이 외에도 심사를 거쳐 선발된 스타트업에 사무공간을 무상 제공하며, 기술지주회사 및 국내외 벤처캐피털과 협력해 투자 유치도 돕는다.

이렇게 전방위적으로 창업 지원을 아끼지 않는 한양대는 2025년 1학기부터 창업대학원을 개원하고 1기 입학생을 맞았다. 한양대는 앞으로 학부생 중심의 창업 교육과 지원 프로그램에서 한발 더 나아가 창업대학원을 중심으로 교원이나 연구원들을 혁신 기업가로 양성하기 위한 교육과 지원체계를 강화할 계획이다. 창업대학원에서 개설되는 교과목(실리콘밸리 라이브 등)은 입학생뿐 아니라 창업에 관심이 있는 여타 대학원 과정의 학생들도 교과과정을 이수할 수 있다. 한양대 창업대학원은 기술 기반 실험실 창업을 활성화하는 또 하나의 촉매제가 될 것으로 기대된다.

Fostering Venture Entrepreneurs through Outstanding Startup Infrastructure

Hanyang University has long been dedicated to entrepreneurship education and support. One of the three goals of the university’s future innovation strategy— known as the 3S Innovation—is cultivating global entrepreneurs who contribute to job creation and national growth through startups and technology transfer. Based on this, Hanyang University is widely recognized as Korea’s leading startup university, holding top records, such as No. 1 in the number of student entrepreneurs and No. 1 in producing venture CEOs.

“In line with its emphasis on a practical academic culture, Hanyang University established Korea’s first ‘Center for Global Entrepreneurship’ in 2009, initiating a shift from passive to proactive entrepreneur development. At the time, there were no universities that paid attention to entrepreneurship education. However, Hanyang University made a forward-looking investment 16 years ago, believing that fostering entrepreneurs is the true path to cultivating national leaders. We take pride in having played a significant role in elevating the standard of entrepreneurship education across Korean universities.”

The Institute for Entrepreneurship at Hanyang University, which oversees entrepreneurship education and various startup support programs, has established a customized support system that spans the entire startup lifecycle—from preparation and launch to growth and exit. This includes funding, infrastructure, workspace, and mentoring. In addition to offering stage-specific entrepreneurship curricula, the university runs startup competitions, student startup clubs, field-based startup practicums, startup leave of absence programs, and startup scholarships, all within a startup-friendly academic framework. Furthermore, it operates the “247 Startup Dorm,” a residential facility where students can live on full scholarships and focus entirely on their ventures. Selected startups also receive free office space, and the university facilitates investment opportunities through collaboration with its technology holding company and domestic and international venture capital firms.

Demonstrating its comprehensive commitment to supporting entrepreneurship, Hanyang University launched its Graduate School of Entrepreneurship in the first semester of 2025, welcoming its inaugural cohort. Moving beyond its current undergraduate-focused entrepreneurship education and support programs, the university now aims to strengthen its educational and support systems centered on the Graduate School of Entrepreneurship, with the goal of developing faculty members and researchers into innovative entrepreneurs. Courses offered at the Graduate School of Entrepreneurship (such as Silicon Valley Live) are open not only to enrolled students but also to graduate students from other programs who are interested in entrepreneurship. The Graduate School of Entrepreneurship is expected to serve as another catalyst for promoting technology-based laboratory startups.

Universities will shift their focus from education and research to innovation, and the success of labbased startups will become a key indicator of a university’s prestige.

혁신 글로벌 기업가의 산실 될 터

“실험실 창업은 단순히 우수한 기술을 보유하고 있다고 가능한 것이 아닙니다. 대학 차원의 전략적인 지원 체계와 민간과 연계된 자금, 시장과의 연결 고리가 성공의 조건이라고 할 수 있죠. 해외 유수의 대학들은 오래전부터 실험실 창업을 활성화하기 위해 창업 친화적인 문화를 조성하고 제도적, 재정적으로 지원해 왔습니다. 구글, VM웨어, 제넨텍(Genetech) 같은 글로벌 기업이 모두 이 같은 생태계에서 탄생했습니다.”

해외 대학 실험실 창업의 대표 사례로 거론되는 것이 스탠퍼드대학과 도쿄대학이다. 미국 스탠퍼드대학은 기술이전사무소를 통해 연구 성과의 사업화를 체계적으로 지원한다. 도쿄대학은 산학협력본부를 중심으로 기술이전과 창업 지원을 통합 관리하며 자체 펀드를 조성해 연구기반 스타트업에 직접 투자 중이다. 실제 도쿄대학은 2022년 기준으로 330여 개의 스핀오프 창업을 기록해 아시아 대학 중 실험실 창업에서 독보적인 위치를 점하고 있다. 한양대는 두 대학과 어깨를 나란히 하기 위한 다음 스텝으로, 창업대학원 개원과 2025년도 실험실 특화형 창업선도대학 사업 선정을 계기로 창업 육성 시스템을 고도화하고, 혁신 창업자의 베이스캠프로 도약하겠다는 비전을 제시했다.

“대학은 이제 교육 중심, 연구 중심에서 혁신 중심으로 바뀌게 될 것입니다. 즉 얼마나 많은 창업가를 배출하고, 그 창업가가 얼마나 많은 매출을 창출했는가가 대학의 위상을 정하는 중요한 지표가 될 것입니다. 좋은 창업 아이디어를 가진 한양인이라면 주저하지 말고 창업에 도전해 꿈을 펼치기를 바랍니다. 창업지원단이 공간, 자금, 컨설팅 등 전력을 다해 지원할 것입니다.”

A Cradle for Innovative Global Entrepreneurs

“Laboratory startups are not feasible simply because one possesses excellent technology. What truly determines success is a university-level strategic support system, funding linked with the private sector, and strong connections to the market. Leading global universities have long fostered an entrepreneurship-friendly culture and provided institutional and financial support to promote lab-based startups. Global companies such as Google, VMware, and Genentech all emerged from such ecosystems.”

Stanford University and the University of Tokyo are often cited as leading examples of lab-based startup ecosystems. Stanford University systematically supports the commercialization of research outcomes through its Office of Technology Licensing. The University of Tokyo manages technology transfer and startup support in an integrated manner through its Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and has established its own fund to directly invest in research-based startups. As of 2022, the university had recorded over 330 spin-off startups, securing a leading position among Asian universities in laboratory entrepreneurship. As the next step to stand shoulder to shoulder with these two institutions, Hanyang University has presented a vision to enhance its startup incubation system and become a basecamp for innovative entrepreneurs by launching the Graduate School of Entrepreneurship and being selected for the 2025 Lab-Based Startup Leading University Program.

In other words, the number of entrepreneurs a university produces and the revenue those entrepreneurs generate will become key indicators of the university's prestige.
